Samuel Longbottom came from Mixenden on the outskirts of Halifax and was a local mill owner. He was also the organist at the Mount Zion Methodist Church in Ogden, Halifax, holding the position for over 22 years. He also trained the Black Dike Brass Band, and conducted it when it won its first prize at the Hull contest in July 1856.
